Just curiious. I know the current model was out right before spring of 01. has been out about 3.5 years in North America.
I read most likely early Spring of 06.

Yes, that is a hard one.
Spring of 2006 sounds just right. I believe Detroit or Chicago 2005 would be the reveal, although that does sound early.

Wonder if hyundai will add the must have standard feature like it did with the current generation (side airbags) and what will that feature be...
I would really like a better GT version of the elantra, leather and blue gauges do not make it any better IMHO. It needs more HP!

Yes! That would be nice! And that is all the current one is missing!

I wouldn't mind if the car has a more powerful engine, more luxurious interior, and better handling ;D

I think elantra handles fine, and has enough power, but I do concur, i woul dnot mind having say a small V6 in Elantra , a V6 of say 160HP. My sonata has only around 163HP, and it does ok for 0-60. now, if they put that in elantra, and had weight of it at say 2900-3000 lbs(it is currently what, 2,700lbs?), the car would be able to go at a fair pace.
Spouse wants V6, so we may end up with Sonata(base model V6) instead, since Elantra will not be getting one.

hey, hondatech, Elantra already has a larger engine that Civic, by what, 11 HP? I think elantra now has 138HP and 135 torque(or ius it 136 torque at 4000 rpm?) and 138 hp at 5,600-6000 rpm?

I don't recall saying anywhere that the Civic had more than enough power. As a matter of fact, I can't believe Honda produced some thing like that. There is pretty much nothing I find impressive about the car. So much for Honda being a MOTOR company, puting a geeky 1.7L in a Civic with only 127hp makes Honda look like a TOY company. The Civic does not deserve to have an 'H' in front of the car whether it's a squarish one or one with the oval shape. However, I don't see why Hyundai shouldn't have a more powerful engine just because Honda didn't. This shouts "follower", which should not be Hyundai's character if they are to take on the world. The Elantra might have a more powerful engine than the Civic, but keep in mind that the Civic is also about 200 pounds lighter, I think. So the acceleration shouldn't be that different. To give you a few example, the upcoming Chevy Cobalt will have an engine linup from 140 to 200 hp. The Focus offers a 2.3L with 150hp and Mazda offers the same engine in their Mazda3 with 160. Mitsubishi also have a Lancer 2.4 with 160, and Suzuki offers the Aerio now with 2.3L and 155hp. Therefore, the Elantra isn't a leader in terms of engine power in the segment regardless of the Civic.

It was the power leader fo many years, I think. Then, the 2001 redesign brought in an even mor powerful engine, but in its second yea, the Suzuki Aerio came along.

There is nothing wrong with Elantra's power really. It's just that more would be better. And even that can be easily solved. Since Hyundai is developing its own 1.8-2.4L 4 cyl engine. All it has to do is just drop the 2.4L into the Elantra, and problem solved. Hopefully Hyundai will do that in their next Elantra (assume that the engine would fit in an Elantra)

I think the 2.4 is destined for the Base Model 4 cylinder Sonata. It seems they have a pattern of 2.0 for elantra, 2.4 for sonata, for the past 5 + years.
If the sonata V6 is gonna be 3.3 liter with 229-249HP, as some sites suggested, then i see no reason why the 2.4 could not be bumped up to say 180-200HP, and the 2.0 made into 160-170HP, similar size(for gt, at least) as Sentra "Se-R".
and maybe Oh, 150-160 for gls(or just 160, at least, 4 all elantras.).
One magazine said if the elantra gt had say another 25 -30 HP(or range I mention) it'd be a blast, and near perfect car for running around, and more fun to drive.

yeah, Andrew, i do recall Hyundai touting 130HP for elantra a few years back, and that was when Nissan sentra had 115HP, and others maybe 105-110HP? I remember that our 90 sentra had 90 hp/97 torque, then Geo Storm came out(Isuzu car) and it had 2.0 liter 4/120HP and it was FAST feeling. HP seems to go up all the time. Wasnt; scoupe with "turbo" 115HP 10 years ago, the last ones sold?
Now the Hyudnai"Sports" car tiby has a lot more than that, and even elantra has 23 more HP.
In the late60's and early 70's HP sold. Everyone was like "tim the toolman taylor" , from Home Improvement comedy, "More Power"(add grunts here).
By 1980's, MPG ruled, not HP. Even into most of the 90's, camry had what, 180-190 HP by 1998?
I read where malibu had 150HP around late 90's, when Sonata had 170, and 190 for Maxima(mid-90's), now people are not happy with 200HP. To each their own.
It is just "funny" that we survived with 90 HP cars 20 years back, lol.
(not slamming anyone, just making an observation or two).

I wish manufactures would advertise Wheel Horsepower instead of just engine HP. Drivetrain loss alone can take 15- 30% of the power with RWD and AWD having the most loss. And we all know that auto trannys take even more power from the engine.
