I got a "break" , of sorts, from th e Hyundai dealership. I got the V6 timing belt for 4 cylinder price,235+taxes and labor. I only paid maybe 200 over for labor( for parts for timing belt, water pump, some seals, and a few other items).
If parts are say 300, I usually end up pay 550-600 for labor, at another deaelrship. they may have been trying to get a new customer ,perhaps, by giving me a free rental for 2 days, and saving me about 80 or so dollars under quoted price.
Looks like we will be staying with Hyundai for awhile(as ling as their styling does not become "bland" or quality returns to Excel1990).

Hmmm, now I’m a little scared about replacing my Accord with a Sonata after hearing these repair comments.

;D To some people, a water pump replacement would be grounds for shopping elsewhere! Kid ya not. Example:(PS:Hey, I have had only one car with over 200,000 an donly needing CV boots for replacement, and that was 1990 sentra XE. Never replaced water pump, etc. They over built those cars at one time. Not nowadays). A guy at the Hyundai dealership in Dayton last may of '03(when i had tune up done) was looking at elantra. He told me he took his 98 Accord into the shop @ 105,000 miles 4 a tune up and said that they inofrmed him his water pump was on the verge of going out. Replacement cost/labor? $350. He acted like it was an outrage, and all he should do is tune ups, and change fluids. Can happen to any car. I have owned 7 cars in 20 year,s and ll of them have parts the broke. Father in law had a Toyota truck that needed the engine rebored at 137,000 miles, it was gunked up. Needed new liefters, I think, also, he said. It was an 87, and the cost was 1,300 dollars at local shop. Hey said"Toyota labor and partts at a dealership are horrendously expensive". Also, read about Honda tranny recalls a few months back on thecarconnection.com, and Toyota having more recalls than ever in their history(severe or not, it is"Un-Toyota-like" supposedly). Sludged engines, anyone? ;-) Nissan has had problems with engines stalling around the world the past year, and what? Over a million+ recalls?(Altima, for one). Who knows? All I know is from driving a Neon for 2 days, Elantra has no worries there. Neon would be a great car, IMHO, for $12,000 or less(regular one) but not for 15K! thing feels years behind most other cars in this catagory.

If that was the case, then Hyundais would be pretty reliable wouldn't it?? My Accord is a '97 with almost 100,000 miles. So far, I have paid nothing more than regular maintainence, even after being in an accident few years ago. It was fairly priced to buy and rather trouble free to own. I don't see why I should expect less from today's cars. With all the technology available today, I thought cars should be better today, not worse. Or else we'd be going backwards. I don't think any industry can survive if it's going backwards. It doesn't make sense either. Also, how does having recalls suggest that Hondas are not reliable?? Can you find a carmaker that never had any recalls? Certainly not Hyundai/Kia. Moreover, if such a carmaker exists, it would only suggest how irresponsible they are, as no one can make all of their cars trouble free. I would never buy from such a company. Just about any car compare favorably with a Neon. I wonder what Hyundai would do if the Elantra didn't. It's interesting that you compared a Hyundai to a Neon and didn't find it diminishing Hyundai.

;D To some people, a water pump replacement would be grounds for shopping elsewhere! Kid ya not. Are you saying that I’m the “some people”? I don’t mean to be sensitive, but it sure sounds like it, and maybe you’re right about that. I am way too picky and stupid for a Hyundai. Just like this guy.

I own a honda and I spend way too much money for regular maintanence. I can't even fix the other problems that it has.
The transmission is growing weird on me and the front windows don't close properly(wind sound is atrocious) and the back doors don't open from the outside. I also had to replace a front axle twice because they broke on me.
Sorry Hondatech, but I think most automobiles have their share of problems. I just wish my honda civic had the maintanence costs that hyundais have.

We are not sure inmy household, now, about anything., We will have to see Hyudnai products that come out late 05-early 06 before deciding. Spouse already said Hyudnai is good, but if they become same price as everyone else, and they do not make a design she likes, or have a car loaded to the gills(that it'd be 3 grand more to load up say Honda or Toyota to be comparable to a Hyudnai)...then she will try Toyota(sorry, gang. I am still ahving problems with my sonata, despite 1,300 worht of repairs last month. and it has only 115,000 miles, which my 1990 sentra had less problems until 213,000 miles.)
I like the new sonata(from pix we seen) except it is looking "VW-ish", and is ok, if you like that look. To me, going form Jaguar, to VW, is a step backwards, IMHO, not forwards.
Why not copy a Yugo for the next Accent, LOL? It was a huge hit in 1984-85!
Hope next Elantra is solid . if that 145HP/nearly 140 torque 2.0 liter i read about on another thread is real, and Elantrea looks good, handles and drives better than even current model, and porice is right; I'm there. if not, there's always the tC!

Sorry to say this, but if you want a Toy, get a Toy. I don't think Scion is as good as a genuine Toyota. The quality report from that survey didn't come out very good for Seon(I know I misspelled the name).

got a Sonata 04glsv6 ebony black, and a Scion tC(the reviews were of the bx and xa, or "Echo"-reworked- and the funky box from japan, or whatever, bX)... Was gonna get a Tibby V6, the but wife stopped in one dealership, and they REFUSED to budge on MSRP, so she left the dealership. So, between that and tranny dying out at 103,000 miles, we went and got a tC. Nice ride, BTW. about 80% as quiet as a Sonata, on good highway. Fast, too. Has the 2.4 liter from Camry( simialr (?)engine that my father in laws toyota 87 truck had, which got nearly 300,000 miles). We did pay for 6year/100K warranty, but it covers EVERYTHING, radio, switches, engine,etc.. I did not care for the fact they made something like $779 over invoice. Should be more like $300, tops, over dealers invoice. The sonata, well, wife called from the dealership all upset, and the scan said "tranny dying", so we got the sonata. It was like 5 grand off due to end of year sale. the rep wholooked at car reset the engien light and said nothing up front office. We did get ripped off about about 1,400on trade in, but they sell thoise cars" as is" on this places used lot, and have a 90 day warranty. Unless they fixed it, or sold it to an auction.... someone will perhaps buy that car, and definitely be back before the 90 days is up.... and they WILL pay more than the 1,400 they ripped that car off for.LOL. Terrible, but WE lost 2 grand on Sonata(traded it for tC). on repairs. We also got ripped off(to an extent) on Sonata by about 1,290 dollars trade in. These gusy see EDMUNDS fair price paper, and still bicker and refuse to pay in full. ONLY ONE delaership ever paid us fairly, but they do not sell tC's there. Would haev went to Columbus or Covington,KY, but when the cars are about to die, time 2 ditch 'em. Seems the past 5 years, we NEVER get to "pick" a car, at our leisure, it is due to near death(like 200sx, and 2 Hyundai's) or car is so old, rain drips in from windshiled(due to rust), and other problems(1990 sentra).... Would be nice to ONCE before I die, or within the next 6 years tops, to be able to find a car, and go get it when you wnat it, or walk out of a dealership when they offer you penauts for a car(well, these cars ran "OK " when they got them, so maybe "revenge" /payback will get them both, lol). That is why I don;t buy used, btw. See ya. Who knows? If this Sonata lasts w/o the problems of our 99, we will return to Hyundai in say late 09-early 2010, when these cars are paid off. If not, who knows.... mayeb a "SMART" car, ?

Yo hjr,
Hope your cars work out for you and hope they both hold up.
I have never owned a vehicle that I was fully satisfied with either, but I'm sure they exist.
God bless.

Thanks-Titandan. Yeah, a tranny dying out @103,000 miles? Never had a tranny die out, even on 99 sonata. I did read on Detnews.con/autoinsiders this past week that GM(and others) have had a 12 Billion dollars increase im warranty repairs(main culprit that seems to share with Sonata is Water Pumps dying out prematurely)...so it seems it is not just Hyundai. Then there's the Honda's with tranny problems, too/recalls not too long ago, or the Altima engines stalling out, anda 2.3 million world wide recall on that issue. Seems like the 70's again, lol....engines seemed to last longer, but rest of the car has issues.
If e think of a new sonata 5-6 years down the road, I hope it looks more upscale than the -6 coming out)even my spouse was like' they copied Benz and Jaguars lines, nwo going to Audi or Honda? Kind of going down the food chain, so to speak, in designs).
Some like it... and yes, the hood creases in the 06 photos do make it a tinyh bit more "flashy" than the current Accord.
Ithe 04 I now have had 25.3 MPG first tank of gas, and now at 700 miles, mainly hwy, only getting a bit over 22 mpg on Sonata :-(
It is a touch faster , it feels, thant old sonata, and handles a tiny bit better(mnaybe due to larger tires?).
tC, only a few nit picky things: 1) thye have a "punch out" perforated circle on drivers side bumper(to punch out for towing?)..kind of ugly, and 2) the "trunk" area of the hatch is nto as deep as the old tibby's(in fact, the car may have Less room due to fold flat seats than the Tib) and 3) When you open the hatch, the "cover" does not lift up with it, like Tibby did.
Pluses: 1)Fast, Getting 30-31mPg on first 2 tanks of gas(almost as fast as V6 Tibby). 2) decent overall styling inside and out3) handles great. 4) has abs std. May be useful one day? I also like the slight;y reclining rear seats. Hey, they "stole" tibbys rear end! also, I wish they had the Mazda3 body style(tied ofr best witrh sonata, for undeer 20grand, IMHO).
See you all later.

almost 1 month on sonata and 1,500 miles. CD player died out for a few hours my last one on 99 sonata lasted until 57,000 miles/2years, then the cassette lasted anoher 15 months. If it keeps acting up, I will take it to the dealership and the guy siad he might go ahead and order a new stereo. Got a rock chip outta the hood froma semi trcuk; down to the metal Need to go get some Ebony Black paint/primer from Hyundaiwithin a week or two, and fix that mess before winter. I do like the car a lot, and the locals gawk like they are looking at a space ship! (well, when you see tons of Cavaliers, Neons, and S-10's in Wal-Mart lots, this 04 sonata dras attention, especially with stereo cranked up, lol). My wife is sticking with the Scion tC. The seat belts(Shoulder belt) , NO MATTER how I sit, the thing ends up on the side of my neck!!!!! It is annoying! I NEVER had a shoulder belt sit on my neck, in any car I ever owned. What If I slammed on the brakes; instant broken neck, perhaps? I did gripe to Scion, and they gave me a generic response(NOTE: In their owners manual, if you are too heavy to be able to use the seat belt, Scion will give them a free belt extension, and put on at Scion.....I asked them if they had a conversion kit for a sliging height adjuster, so I wouldn't get choked to death in an accident! Never got a real reply yet. Also, ordered spalsh guards 3 weeks ago wehn we got the car, paid for them, and still did not get them in the mail! I am gonna put them on, if they ever get here). I have a short torso, but wife is a tiny bit taller, thus she can safely drive the car(MAN, would I be thrwoing a fit if I got this thing for me only.... I'd be dumping it for a V6 Tibby, and woudl take the few grand hit/loss on it> The car is GREAT, but no tif you can not adjust the seat/belt combo to keep from wrapping up near your neck)....I may call Scion/Toyota to see about them doing some type of "Corolla" height adjustable thing(IF POSSIBLE) down the road, for the Scion, of course I will have to pay for it(Why does "HEAVY peopel" get FREE belt extender, yet they can not fix the belt for us short people?). When I drove it 2 times before, I had a shirt with a collar(haevy collar) that kept the belt away from my neck, but on weekend, I don't wear sstuff but t-shirts, and that is not helping. That shoulder belt right on the side of the neck. Anyhow, SPouse's car now. If the Sonata holds up better than the 99 did....about end of 09-ealry 10, I expect to get the Tibby(IF it is anything like thet HCD-8, that is)...... See ya.

As most of you know, I got the Elantra GT hatch 2005. I really like this ride and the way it looks. Way more sporty feeling than the Civic I own. The interior is pretty neat and clean. The only thing I thought was missing was the MP3 player. I then remembered reading something about the stereo changing in the 2005 Elantras or something. I guess that's what it was. Not that I have a need for a MP3 player or anything. Cool car overall and I'm pleasantly surprised with Hyundai! Doesn't feel too rough or noisy yet. It's actually more quiet than my civic or my father's clanky volvo. I recommend this car.
God bless.

I lost 5 minutes worht of typing. Long sotyr short: GLS 04 sonata has 9000 miles. All issues like cd player sometimes dying out seems to have disappeared, and brakes no longer stick when wet out. Have some hood dings that need paint this Spring. Seats? I wish I had the leather.
I had hoped ot be in a position to buy either a 05 sonata or 06 sonata last year, but thansk to shoddy dealership work..... we did nto make it. they killed our 99 sonata prematurely, to be honest(yes, radiator should not have leaked before 120,000 miles, since we did hte serivces, but the dealership should have easily fixed it right the first 2 times!).
Oh well, maybe next time we can buy what WE want. We have only ONCE been able to really buy what we like.
See ya. I am hoping the 06 comes out in march, and is in our area for april autoshow.
