Ok, let me explain my area of the world here.
I live in a county that at one time(as few as 20 years back?) was mainly farm land, and thus, farmers.
Now, fast forward to 2004. Still about 55% farmers live here, but rest(younger kids) going to college, and moving to larger cities, etc.
The older people still are "Generational Buyers", meaning in marketing terminology, they just buy what their parents purchased, for various reason.
Most people around here drive GM stuff(60%), Ford maybe 25%, Chrysler maybe 10% and the other 5% is "foreign stuff'(even if made in USA).
The reason most buy these cars, besides Generational Buying patterns, is the fact they are "living waay in the past".
here's what I mean; they say" Buy American" only, to save jobs. Hmmmm.
Get This: My brohter in law, every time I see him, Drools over my 99 Sonata, and compliments it(he does nto say this about his dads suv, or any one elses car).
He wants one, a Sonata, but will nto buy one due to peer pressure at work and his neighborhood!(Kid you not).
he got a taurus, but likes the Sonata better. I told him it is gonna come out of Alabama, USA, but he still is terrified to buy one. It is insane!
I even offered to sell him ours next year for whatever is left on payments!
my mother in law said she'd buy it, but does nto want a fight with her husband!
(He works as a contractor, for 5 years, at one car making outfit, and they said"we'll direct hire you when you get 4 year engineering degree". he got it, they fired him. Yet, he buys American, so"he gets direct hired' at another car making place. He never learns, it has been 10 years already, 2 places, same nonsense. They never hire contractors for dircte hire. Oh, he drives Chrysler products, 51% German owned, BTW. Buy American?).
Anyhow...
Well, I tell them that Toyota/GM have supplied Americans jobs at NUMMI in California for 20 years, making various Chevy/Toyota vehicles(4 cylinders).
I then tell them Honda in Marysville gives people jobs(I know a lady who liked the job she had out there, but felt "Uneasy" working there, like she wasa traitor and hated to even say"I work at Honda"!, like she was ashamed of it! Liek she "abandoned"her country! I kid you not, these folks are something else to behold!).
Well, you get the idea. Even the people who work there, feel" Gulity", and some are happy to have the jobs.
Anyhow, I get terrible looks, and nasty remarks given to me due to what I drive, by a few people.
The rest buy their AVEO's and say"Buy American" LOL( of course, AVEO being Daewoo, basically)..
These people are really messed up.
They get mad when you mention AVEO is South Korean car for Chevy(but that is ok?)....
then I say"Hyundai is building in USA", and they get all angry, and silent and ignore you.
In Dayton, though, most city dwellers do not care about any of the above nonsense. They buy what they like, just as we do in our family.
What gives with people?
Between road ragers these days, and people "buying American" (AVEO), it si enough to make you want to walk, if you could!
Is it just in rural areas that this anti-foreign vehicles nonsense happen?
