It will be sportier than the current one, and more-so than Kia's Amanti. Whether I will call it a sport-lux sedan as of yet, I can't really say... Sorry... but that is not what its reputation is anyway... and this won't change completely... but it will be interesting to hear what the autmotive press has to say about this change. anyways, I cannot wait to see the first prototypes begin showing up!

Hello all, this is my first post. I have some good friends at Hyundai Motor America and this is what they have been told about the new XG.
It will be on a stretched version of the Sonata platform. So the spy pics make sense. It will be released in middle 06 following the new Sonata, Santa Fe, Accent, and maybe the new minivan.
The only thing I can add in the powertrain department is that Hyundai is moving to certify all of their future engines for 200K miles instead of the 130Kmiles that they are today. The bad part of that is that the HP may be lowered to increase the engines longevity.
I drive an 02 XG and I hope it gets a new name, bigger back seat, a passenger seat that has 8+ way power instead of 4, and the frameless pillars though cool really cut into head room when getting in and out of the car.

Thanks for the welcome. I promise not to BS. I have to warn folks however that HMC (Korea) is pretty tight lipped about all future products. Last year, the facelifted Elantra was being sold in Korea, and HMA's sales offices still didn't know it was coming.
One of the things I heard from this year's dealer meeting was that the new Hyundai line up was substantially up-market in appearance from today's vehicles. After being shown pics of the entire new line-up, several people I spoke to compared the new Santa Fe to the Lexus RX330.
I don't have tons of info, but I will try to post everything I know on the appropriate threads.

XG (the replacement as it's called now, don't know if will have a name change or not, but it seems like it might), will be out next summer. Main target competitors are the Maxima, Acura TL, etc. It will also incorporate the 06 Sonata's Active Geometry Control Suspension (which uses 2 electronic actuators on the control arms to change rear toe-in in hard cornering helping eleminate fish-tailing). The 3.8L will the be the engine. No concrete #'s on power output yet.

OK, from December 2004 issue of Motortrend(saw it at library ): they said the new 06 Sonata will have 3.3 liter V6, 226HP, and the 4 cylinder will be 163HP, 2.4 liter.... both VVT.
Autoweek had a glimpse of the Sonata, and same picture as posted here as logo.
That was for last week's issue.
As for ratings? I read in either autoweek or on thecarconnection.com months back(when they spoke of the new GEMA plant in Michigan, japan, and S Korea, Global engine allianced,=Mitsu/Chrysler, Hyundai) said that Neon 4 was raated foe 150,000, and elantra was 180,000, but with them pooling resources(and saving them cash) they can buy better parts, and make then engiens last longer, and GEMA shooting for 300,000 mile engines, like Toyota/Honda has!
I'd go back and re-look up the stuff, but I am old and lazy these days.
thecarconnection.com, can go back and look for this on their headlight news, or whatever, detnews.com(autoinsider), or numerous other sites for GEMA info, and should also tell you about the data I just spewed forth. ___________________________________________ Here's from the car connection 16nov Daily Edition: Nov. 16, 2004 Hyundai confirms Sonata, Detroit is a whale of a city. by TCC Team (2004-11-15)
Hyundai Makes the '06 Sonata Official
Though it was on display at the recent Paris auto show, Hyundai's Sonata hadn't officially been shown to the U.S. press in its domesticated version. Now, Hyundai has issued the first shots of the U.S. Sonata, which will issue forth from the company's new plant near Montgomery, Alabama, beginning in 2005. The Sonata will be shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January. The Sonata will be the first vehicle to be produced at the new Hyundai plant. The new, larger Sonata will be available with either a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine or a new 3.3-liter V-6.

Though it is otherwise reducing or severing ties to its Asian partners, DaimlerChrysler expects to save $100 million annually through Global Engine Alliance LLC. The Dundee, Michigan, operation, which will produce a new line of "global" engines, was formed as a joint venture between DCX, Mitsubishi Motors Corp., and Hyundai Motor Co. It will begin three-crew, two-shift, 120-hour-a-week operations in mid-2005, Bruce Coventry, president of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, announced during the opening session of the Management Briefing Seminars. The project, he declared, is "utilizing the best engineering inputs from Mitsubishi, Hyundai and DaimlerChrysler," with a goal of "significantly reducing capital and program lead times." Among several steps taken, the venture purchased three sets of manufacturing equipment in Michigan, South Korea, and Japan. The alliance is outsourcing everything that it doesn't see as core to engine production. The Dundee factory will produce 1.8-, 2.0-, and 2.4-liter engines. The $100 million figure was derived by comparing the forecast price of producing those four-cylinder engines compared to what it costs at the DCX plant in Saltillo, Mexico.
DC Hopes To Keep Best of Mitsu by Jim Burt (4/26/2004) But no more money makes the very future of the Japanese company tenuous.
______________________________________ About V6, read on various other sites months ago thatg the Alabama V6 will also go into 06 Midsized Chrysler sedan(whatever they will call it).... and that will help save cash; more parts ya buy(more engines you build) less costly they are to make, and can buy better parts, just like with GEMA 4 cylinders.
have a great Thanksgiving.
