about Hyundai's quality being at least avg, for now, or better.
Why? well, if ya'll recall, our 01 tiburon needed new front axels at 99,000 miles last summer...covered by warranty. that was the first issue with that car in 3 years. Next? about 5 weeks later, spouse called from a Hyundai dealership, upset, becuase the tranny is nearly shot. No, it was not due to electronics, either.
we owed like 8 grand on it, and after trade in for My 04 sonata....which she got, and didn't like it, due 2 she likes small 2 -3 door vehicles..so she got tC, I got Sonata.
Anyhow, we took a 4 grand hit. the dealership gave us only 60% trade in on the car.
My 99 sonata, well, at 87K, needed new alternator, which was free, under warranty.
I paid 350 for fuel recircualtion valve on the car at 89K,
then, we had the radiator go, the water pump went at 103,000, and on and one it went, every other month, until the car had over 118,000 miles(this car was traded in for the Scion tC)....
Again, we lost a few thousand on that deal, plus the 2K we spent in 6 months keeping it running.
Now...yeah, compared to my 90 sentra, these thigns are bad.... compared to my father in laws jeep grand cherokee(99), having a new tranny put in(he got it used last summer..has 2 years left to pay on it)....
at 110,000.... that is similar to the tibby issue.
So...... my current car has nearly 14K in 8 months.
Only issue was the 1 mph off speedo(one place said they could fix it, another said they couldn't...I just said forget it, if it's gonna be such a big hassle).
The car is fine... No recalls(like the 3 I had for the 99, for engine chip....).
I hope it runs w/o issues for at least 150,000, minimum!
I do liek the cars, and from what I have read, since 2002 models on up, a lot of the issues we had on the tibby and 99 sonata are gone.
Unfortunately, my spouse said "if Hyundai ever gets rid of the 10/100K, then there's no reason to look at their cars again".
Shows that even a 4.0 college student like her can sometimes be misled about say Toyota's "perfection"(see recent recalls, for example), and she ignored my fathe rin laws Jeep issues.
She has fallen under the mindset that Hyundai's are not good, and no reason to buy them except for the warranty!
I just hope my 04 lasts and lasts, to prove her wrong(and prove myself, and belief in Hyundai correct!).
I like the cars, and feel they are better than even the 99 and 01's(minus 1mph off odo...Grrrr)
Do you guys have issues like this; say a family member thinks you're crazy for owning a Hyundai, if they ever drop the warranty, for example?
All cars we've owned(she forgets) have had issues, big or small.
What ya gonna do to convince people otherwise?
Have a good weekend.
