24th may 04 issue(we subscribers get ours earlier, of course, than the newstands).
Long story short, they said it is "average" for 0-60(about 8.5 seconds) for the V6 LX model, and est of 20 grand loaded.
They said the plastics in the interior were hard , the thing barely had enough HP to go up hills and such, and they complained about the shifter "hunting" for gears(automanual).
Sounds like they are on a "Attack frame of mind" over at AW since they mentioned the"JD Powers survey"(they said "drivers like us do not pay attention to JD Powers much, or some nonsense like this).
They said it was quiet and a refined ride, maybe better than Santa Fe, and fit and finish were great.
They said the leather"seats reminded them of vinyl as much as cowhide". They were rough on Hyundai. I think they took a lo to Toyota-Honda editors(who seemed miffed about the JD Powers survey) and they just tore this thing apart.
Of course, editors usually give Hyudnai 7's in their 1-10 ratings, where as most Ownersl(especially on edmunds) give Hyudnai 9's!
Professional jealousy, perhaps, of Hyundai?

Ah dangit! Well since AW doesnt like the new tucson i guess i wont be buying one. Whatever!!! I know how to think on my own and i dont buy into what the editors say about the vehicles they supposedly test. I remember a few months ago they did a short test on the elantra and ragged the heck out of it. They basically said it was tin crap then they go on to drool all over the mazda3 with its high price, cramped interior and numerous engine and electrical problems.

yeah, it appears that some magazines that were just a year or two ago were on the "praise Hyundai" bandwagon are now going a 180 on Hyundai, for some odd reason.
I recall some early reviews on Santa Fe, calling it "weird", and "too odd" looking, "transformer" was another editors comment Io recall. Now they sell over 100,000 units per year in USA alone. (Hyundai originally predicted 25,000 unit sales the first year, and ended up with 42,000 or so, then they figured 50,000 units per year, but doubled that already!).
Yeah, there comments won't affect my purchasing decisions towards Hyundai.
If that HCD-8(or something even close) comes out(Sonata Coupe) and is around 20K l-23K like Solara, I may have to save some cash for 2-3 years!(then again, the Amanti is close to tha price, too!).

I will be interested to see which does better: Tucson or Sportage.

hey,tjo6, this is a LATE reply, but the Mazda3 we test drove LOOKED great, very cool. Sat in it, and they had all the controls on the steering wheel-another neat feature- and the telescopic steering column, and the height adjusting seat belt(this is what annoys me ofd the tC! Unless I see almost uncomfortably, seat up in air, etc, the seat belt digs into my neck :-( I did tell Scion about it)....Mazda3, though, would be a good car, if it were Spectra priced, 13-15K, not `16+K msrp. the 2.0 liter was rough sounding and idleing, the seats were about tied for worst I ever sat in, and total NVH was subpar.
We tested elantra(loud sounding these days, must have moved some insultaion to push the sonata's more?) Spectra was avg, I'd say. really wanted to like that Mazda3, and to be honest, it was the worst car I ever drove(Mazda-wise). Inlaws97 DX(base) Protege is almost as quiet as a Sonata,a nd drives almost as good.
Seems all of these compacts these days are being "cheapened" down, to sort of "force" people who are trying to save a buck or tow to move up to the next class level for the better quality car?
I hope this all changes with the new tC, next gen Elantra, and others(including the 20 K or so msrp SMART cars/suvs,etc)....may force others to tow the line, and bring their small cars back up to snuff.
at one time, it seemd the only difference between compact and midsized cars was price, features, HP. We were crazy about our 90 sentra(it was more quiet than the elantra I tested, or spectra, or mazda3..on maybe a hair louder than tC,but that was a 10K car!).
